One supports multi-dose access, the other does not. Choosing wrongly wastes a vial and can invalidate a run.

Both are clear, both are sterile, both come in a glass vial. The difference is one ingredient, and it changes how many times you can go back to the vial.
Sterile water for injection is water, sterile filtered, nothing else.
Bacteriostatic water is the same water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. Benzyl alcohol suppresses bacterial growth, which is what makes repeated access to the same vial viable rather than reckless.

If you reconstitute a 5mg peptide vial with sterile water and only need a fraction of it, the remainder should be treated as single-access material. With bacteriostatic water the same vial can reasonably be revisited over several weeks.
Benzyl alcohol is not inert in every system. Some cell-based assays are measurably affected by it, so check your protocol rather than defaulting.
Neither product protects against poor technique. Swab the stopper with 70% IPA and let it dry fully. Introduce diluent slowly against the glass wall rather than jetting it onto the cake. Swirl, never shake. Label the vial with the compound, the concentration and the reconstitution date — an unlabelled vial is an unusable vial three weeks later.
They cost very little and they are not interchangeable. Keeping both on the bench means the diluent choice is driven by your protocol rather than by what happens to be in the drawer.
